To continue our mission of providing credible, nonbiased information, Healthy Aging has expanded its advisory board to include experts within the industry. Not only will this invite commentary on topics from those developing the technologies, but it affords us the unique opportunity to bring you "behind-the-scenes" news and insight into these exciting advances.

I'd like to introduce this panel of industry experts and welcome any suggestions on topics you'd like them to address via our blogs, forums and social media mediums.


Robert Ruck
is vice president, Worldwide Marketing, at Sciton Inc. Robert has been in the aesthetic laser business for eight years, 6.5 years with Lumenis and 1.5 years with Sciton. In Lumenis, he held sales and marketing positions for their aesthetic, surgical, ophthalmic and dental businesses. Prior to that, he was a business strategy consultant to medical device companies for seven years. 

Earlier in Robert's career he served as a U.S. Army infantry officer and holds a Master of Public Policy (MPP) from Harvard University and a BS in Engineering and Economics from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Click here to read about Sciton products and services.







Kellie Young
is vice president of Marketing for Lasering USA, national distributor for the MiXto SX Fractional C02 for Skin Resurfacing. Kellie's expertise has been working nationwide with physicians as a business development specialist in the cosmetic medical field since 1994. She describes herself as "a results-driven executive" that has proven success in the execution of successful marketing programs within the medical practice for patient education and new medical technology. "If physicians can offer their patient's superior efficacy in their services and show return on investment, they will consider themselves a successful practice," she says. Dr. Carl R. Thornfeldt
is president, CEO and chief scientific officer of Episciences Inc. He is a practicing dermatologist with over 25 years of skin research experience, 21 U.S. patents granted and more than 20 scientific publications in the area of treatment of skin. Dr. Thornfeldt has co-founded and held the position of CEO at several privately and publicly held companies.In 2003 and 2005, Dr. Thornfeldt was selected as one of the top 50 doctors in the U.S. by the Sinatra Health Report-and the only dermatologist on the list. Dr. Thornfeldt has spent over a decade researching the skin barrier and cutaneous inflammatory conditions. Darik Volpa
, founder and CEO of Understand.com, is a 15-year veteran of the healthcare industry.  From 1994 until 2003 Volpa had a successful career at Stryker Corp., where he developed and launched over 50 medical devices and managed $50 million in products. In 2003 he left Stryker to start Understand.com, a global provider of 3D patient education services for physicians and healthcare companies. In the past six years Understand.com has expanded its library to include hundreds of 3D medical animations and has thousands of clients licensing content from around the world. Jane W. Smith
is the director of Marketing Communications at Candela Corp.  With more than 20 years of marketing communications experience in the medical device field, her expertise includes corporate branding and identity development, positioning, public relations, advertising, Web site strategy and optimization, development of marketing collateral, competitive analysis, investor/trade/consumer communications and trade show/event participation. She has a proven track record of orchestrating and implementing effective direct marketing and lead generation programs. Robb Akridge, PhD, is co-founder and vice president of Clinical Research at Pacific Bioscience Laboratories, makers of the Clarisonic Skin Care System (from the lead inventor of Sonicare®). His mission is to develop technologically advanced and clinically proven products that make a clear difference in skin care, health and beauty.

Dr. Robb received his PhD in Immunology from Texas A&M University and has spent over 25 years in medical and global health research, including lead scientist and clinical trial management positions at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, ICOS Corp. and Sonicare®.
